THE ART OF CONVERSATION

Washed, dried, and clad only in a pair of silk pajama pants--virgin white, no less--Lucas was escorted by Darrell to the elevator that took them up to the third floor. As soon as the elevator doors whispered opened, Lucas noticed a distinct difference between this floor, and the ones below it. The third floor was dark. So dark that Lucas had to put his hands out in front of him to make sure he didn’t walk into a wall once he stepped out of the barely lit elevator.

“I’ve got you,” Darrell said. He closed his hand around Lucas’ left shoulder. “See that glow up ahead?”

“I don’t see… oh, yeah, I do now,” Lucas answered. The elevator doors had shut behind them and near complete darkness had descended except for a soft red and gold glow that illuminated a doorway down a short hallway.

“Head toward it. There aren’t any obstacles in your path,” Darrell assured him.

As he approached the glow, he heard crackling and popping sounds. The glow came from a fire. There were no other sounds. Downstairs there had been laughter, talking, music, and the clinking of glassware. But here? Silence. An almost smothering silence really. It only added to his unease.

He should be terrified or angry, but ever since talking to Konstantin he’d felt soothed. Calmed. Assured that nothing bad was going to happen. He just had to trust Konstantin and everything would be all right. A small voice in the back of his head told him that it was insane to trust a man who had forced him to get undressed to come speak with him. But still he was floating on this strange cloud of surety that everything would be well. He remembered that “feeling” when he’d been outside the club that he was meant to go inside. More than that. That he was meant to be there. But his common sense was telling him, This is crazy. You’re going into a wolf’s den and pretending he’s a playful puppy.

Find the Wolf, the echo of the woman’s voice flowed through his mind.

Lucas’ steps got faster at her words.

Through the doorway was a gracious living room. There was a large fireplace piled high with flaming logs, and a huge video screen covering an entire wall. It showed feeds of various locations within the club, including the locker room he’d just been in. These provided the only other light in the room.

There was little furniture except for a couch pushed against the far wall between two sets of French doors. There appeared to be a large balcony outside. Shutters and blackout shades firmly covered the doors and windows so that no light from the outside, whether sunlight or city lights, could sneak inside. Finally, there were two chairs by the fire. Only one of them was occupied. It was Konstantin.

Just seeing him again had Lucas on full alert. The soothing voice that had told him everything was going to be okay dimmed, while the other voice--the one that told him this entire night had ended in looney-toon land--was louder.
